Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic. There are approximately 12 million native speakers. The two largest dialect groups in the Czech Republic are Bohemian (most widely spoken) and Hanak Moravian, spoken in the southeast. Pimsleur's Czech teaches the Bohemian dialect.

Comprehensive Czech includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus an introduction to reading. Upon completion of this program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Czech alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Czech Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I listen to the program with my kids everyday. They are picking up the language so quickly!!! I'm not doing half bad for an "old dog". It is so practical and easy to use. I recommend more than a half hour a day, but I think a person could glean a lot of practical language skills in a short time. WE LOVE PIMSLEUR!!!!!

      Comments about Czech, Comprehensive:

I really enjoyed this course and it gave me the encouragement to commit to learning the language.

The daily 30 minutes are easy to find, even when you are busy.

I have had compliments on my pronunciation from native Czech speakers.

After this course there is still a lot to learn but it is a great base to start from.

      Highly recommended.

Comments about Czech Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I will be taking a half-month trip to Czech again this summer, and I will eventually be there for an extended period of time. I have been there for a half-month before, and I got a great taste of the language while there...it's complicated, tongue-twisting, and sounds like gargling half the time.
I used the program to help myself when I talk to them this summer, and so I can understand situations and do a little business in the open-air market in Prague. Having taken two years of Spanish classes, I realized that method wasn't the way to go. I tried Pimsleur Czech, and it just clicked. Seriously. It's cheaper than other lessons and methods, works better, and is overall easy to use and fun. I am not disciplined or incredibly talented at sitting in one place and studying. This program is for everybody.
The only thing I really would like better is more of it. There is only one program available for Czech right now.

        Service and delivery comments:

I wish there was another product for learning Czech from Pimsleur. I would like to know some relational words and phrases, too, I guess.

        Comments about Czech, Comprehensive:

My wife is Czech and we just got back from a visit to the family in Plzen. They were impressed at the advances I have made with the language. I was never able to move forward with conventional methods. I bought the Pimsleur Czech mp3 and listen in my car to and from work. We are so busy that I never get the chance to read text books. Now with the combination of books and audio it keeps me more engaged.

This was a great way to learn. It is also a great way to keep motivated. My mother in law was so excited she started sending me e-mails as soon as we returned to the States. Good thing for on-line translators. I'm not that advanced yet.

I have started trying to read and speak with my wife at breakfast. Hopefully I can progress more before the next visit.

Please let me know if something more advanced becomes available.

Comments about Czech Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I used the program before a recent visit to the Czech Republic. In Prague, everyone speaks English, but for those traveling outside the capital, some basic survival Czech is useful. As with all of the level-one Pimsleur courses, you'll get what you need to be polite and find out what you need to know in an efficient, effective, easy-to-use format.
