About the Czech Language
 

Czech, the official language of the Czech Republic, is a West Slavic language with about 12 million native speakers. It is the majority language in the Czech Republic and is spoken by Czechs worldwide. The language was known as Bohemian in English until the late 19th century.  Czech is similar to and mutually intelligible with Slovak and, to a lesser extent, to Polish and Serbian.

Czech-Speaking Countries

The two largest dialect groups in Czech are Bohemian (most widely spoken, and the dialect used in this course) and Hanák Moravian, spoken in the southeast.  In addition the Lachian Silesian and mixed Polish-Czech dialects are spoken by a small number of people in the northeast.  All of the dialects are mutually intelligible. 
 
Czech uses the Latin alphabet, with added accents and symbols.
