Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Croatian, the official language of Croatia, is spoken by approximately 4.5 million speakers in Croatia, plus 1 million speakers in other parts of Europe, the US, and Canada. There are 3 main dialects: kajkavski, cakavski, and štokavski (official dialect). Pimsleur's Croatian teaches štokavski.

Comprehensive Croatian  includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus an introduction to reading.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you'll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You'll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you'll build on what you've learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You'll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you'll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You'll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 11, and are included at the end of Unit 30, to provide you with an introduction to reading the Croatian alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Croatian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I travelled to the Balkans previously and had prepared by using the Pimsleur product which contained only lessons 1-15. It was extremely useful in Bosnia as well. Heading back in a week and have completed this set of lessons and feel much more capable. It is helpul to have a phrase book (does not come with one) as well to work with at the same time as it is not always easy to understand the proper pronunciation without seeing the word.

Comments about Croatian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This course was fantastic. I found it really easy to use and I truly learned a lot. It helps that each lesson builds on the ones before it. I also thought the way the speakers sound out specific words for you to repeat is very helpful. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn Croatian.

      Service and delivery comments:

I wish there was a Croatian II course. I was so disappointed I would have to stop after learning so much. If there was a second course, I would definitely buy it.

Comments about Croatian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I've had such a hard time with languages. Instead of learning a language, usually I feel like I'm memorizing a bunch of phrases and repeating them but it never feels automatized. But with Pimsleur, it's different. Somehow the lessons are constructed so that I start "getting it" and I've noticed that I am able to react to a situation with the proper words instead of calling to mind the words I want and then translating them. I now have high hopes of becoming fluent in Croatian. My Croatian friends are even a little surprised how well I can speak. All I do is practice each day while walking to and from work. Over time, I learn.

The only problem is that there isn't a Phase 2! When will Pimsleur put out another Phase? I will buy it right now.

Comments about Croatian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Have been learning in the car and the program is great way to get you to speak the language, learn many phrases and use them in different ways. We absolutely need additional programs though, I am only half way through and all I got is, "I speak Croatian", a few directions, and a few drinks, but I think I'm going to need a bit more to actually become comfortable in conversation.

        Service and delivery comments:

I think it needs more extensive vocabulary. I have learned just a little Croatian throughout my life, so I already knew some (but very little) and maybe that skews my opinion, but it seems like you get a few phrases and just repeat them again and again, then change it up (but with the same words) and repeat it again and again. I think the same lessons could teach more by mixing it up with different vocabulary. Like when you talk about getting something to eat, rather than just talking about "something to eat" and then "lunch" and "dinner", once in awhile throw in, "steak, potatoes, broccoli" so the learners can learn a few more useful words in the process. But then again, who am I to question Pimsleur's method? ;)
