            Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) I-IV:

Pimsleur has done it again. I have previously found its language programs superbly effective for a basic level of communication in another language. After completing about 25% of Mandarin I, I am astonished at what I can say already. As well as what I can still learn as a senior. It's easy to learn and retain the necessary communication skill. I also really like the speakers used, because it's easy to mimic expression and tone beyond what you might see written in a textbook by listening closely to the speakers. Thanks Pimseur!!

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) Phases 1-4:

I live in China but after over four years of trying to learn enough Chinese to live using adhoc methods, I had learned considerable vocabulary but really had practically no conversational ability. My family is Chinese but they are truly not good at helping me with learning. Enter Pimsleur, after many unsuccessful attempts using Rosetta Stone. I spent at least 400 hours on an old version of the program which had three parts, repeating it over and over and then trying things out with my family. Within 6 months, I could move about in China with some confidence on my own. Therefore, I then purchased the new version of Mandarin I-IV. I am now doing that series - it's too easy in many ways, but I need repetition. I estimate I'll spend 9 months on Pimsleur total and even later use the more advanced lessons for review. The best part is ability to conveniently use on my cellphone. I do 2-3 lessons daily at the gym this way. I've got a long, long ways to go with Chinese, but Pimsleur gave me the critical mass and confidence to really start learning.

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) Phases 1-4:

I lived in China for some years and so have used other programs. This is the best I have done so far. Too many course focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. That is far too much. Pimsleur is just speaking and listening. The 30-minute-a-day lessons are perfect, and the repetition trains my brain. I find myself answering the questions automatically. Great program!

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) Phases 1-4:

I've used several Pimsleur language products, along with products from other companies. The common wisdom among those who have a need to learn multiple languages is, get Pimsleur first to get good pronunciation, then use other products to expand vocabulary. In the case of this Mandarin course, it will turn out to be the easiest language learning experience you will have. I'm only part way through the first part, and already intercepting full sentences spoken in my mixed language workplace. And mandarin is a good choice if you're picking just for fun, because there are no plurals, no verb conjugation, word order isn't as important as in other languages, and complex combinations in other languages turn out to be an easy word with a tack on. Chinese is truly about the easiest language I've learned. (As long as you don't learn to write it).
