Mandarin Chinese III includes another 15 hours of spoken language practice and one additional hour of culture notes, and is designed is designed to be used after completion of Levels II and III.

  • The beginning offers you the chance to further expand your vocabulary and increase your fluency to an even higher level. In these lessons, you’ll gain experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners. • In the next 10 lessons your skills will show everincreasing mastery of the language. Speaking with grace and complete naturalness, you’ll enjoy fluid conversations on many new subjects. Delving deeper into cultural norms and situations, you’ll find yourself responding without thinking, and able to choose from a wide accumulation of vocabulary and structures.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you are nearing fluency with agile responses, and a natural-sounding, nearnative accent. You’re able to utilize the language in more subtle ways, and speak consistently using past, present, and future tenses appropriately. Self-confidence soars as you experience the language and culture; no longer as a foreigner, but with a deepening insight into an expanding new world.

One hour of recorded Culture Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These Notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

This is perfect for people who want to be able to speak comfortably in Mandarin. It allows you to pick up language as someone who already speaks your native language fluently - Rosetta Stone's overly simplistic picture-based model has never worked for me. This is a wonderful stepping stone for those who have had basic Mandarin, or for those who studied awhile ago and need a refresher. It certainly isn't advanced, but holds true for the product description for this level. The lessons are based on likely real-world scenarios and have a sensical progression. This might be particularly helpful if you studied Mandarin in college, as these lessons are more business-world oriented than the dorm life/dating/local attractions-based lessons I've seen repeated in college textbooks. I have recommended this product to everyone who has asked me how they should start learning conversational Mandarin.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 3, Units 1-30:

Five months ago my mother-in-law arrived from China to live permanently with my family. I spoke virtually no Mandarin when she arrived. I started with Pimsleur Mandarin 1 a few weeks later, practicing in my car going to and from work. I am now on Lesson 16 of Mandarin 3. I am able to have everyday conversations with my mother-in-law, and both my wife and her mother are astonished at how quickly I am picking up the intonation and the grammer of the language. I have studied several other languages using different methods; this is by far the best language learning experience I've ever had. It could be improved if the course came with transcripts of the lessons, with the Chinese part written in Pinyin. At the minimum the new vocabulary of each lesson should be available for reading and review.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 3, Units 1-30:

I'm at lesson 11 of Mandarin 3. I started this program in October 2013. I speak Mandarin better now, at about the halfway point than I did Spanish after two years of college Spanish. Of course there is no reading and writing, but with Mandarin, literacy is an entirely different skill set. There appears to be about zero relationship between written and spoken Mandarin. I use the course during my daily commute and it works great. I typically will go through the lesson 3-4 times before I have it well enough to move on, but if you have a 30 minute commute that's a new lesson every two days.

      Service and delivery comments:

#1 I would add more courses. I'm excited to see that there is recently added an Mandarin 4. However at the pace I'm going I expect to have about a 4 - 5 hundred word vocabulary when I finish. I'd like to continue and would definitely pay for more advanced lessons.

#2 There could be better spacing between the questions and answers in the lessons. Sometimes I have only a second or so to answer a fairly complicated compound sentence with past tense before the answer is given. Then an easy question with a pause of several seconds before the answer is given. The timing could be better. That said, it is the only thing that I would improve upon.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 3, Units 1-30:

I have been using this program for about one year and I think it's a highly ingenious method of teaching a new language. My experience with it has been amazing. I have learned a great deal of Mandarin and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 3, Units 1-30:

I own phases 1,2,3. I was dabbling for about a year with phase one.
But for the last month I've been living in China. I've been listening to about 5 hours a day and listening to whilst sleeping. A bit full on I know.
But it's frustrating for me not been able to communicate. And within a month
I'm starting to understand native speakers and speak many statements and carry out small conversations. All within a month. I have tried every app under the sun and other methods but this approach so easily engages you. I can't really imagine a better way to learn a language. It's a bit like training wheels on a bike. I can see them soon being taken off.
