Description

Includes 30 lessons and culture notes on 16 CDs, plus a culture notes booklet

This course teaches Mandarin, also known as Standard Chinese. Mandarin is the official spoken language in Mainland China and Taiwan. It is also widely spoken in Singapore and Malaysia, and it is one of the five official languages of the UN. Mandarin is used in Chinese schools, colleges, universities, and in the media. Learn Mandarin Chinese today with Pimsleur.

Can learning another language be as easy as speaking your own? Yes with Pimsleur it’s that easy. Learn on your own time, at your own pace, and wherever you choose. Mandarin Chinese II includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one additional hour of culture notes, and is designed to be used after completing Level 1.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you begin to use the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Conversations become fuller, and learners are able to discuss business and social activities, manage shopping situations, and express their interests. As you progress, vocabulary is expanded and fluency increases.
  • The next 10 lessons allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You learn to bargain with shopkeepers, deal with business situations, get and give medical information, and discuss the weather.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ve doubled your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll gain experience asking for assistance, finding a location that is some distance away, and using relative structures – faster, slower, etc. Sports and leisure activities are explored, as well as shopping, changing money, and future travel plans. By the end, you’re speaking at a midintermediate level with nearnative pronunciation, and you are comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

One hour of recorded Culture Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These Notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

Pimsleur system is approachable, fun and delivers personal success. Good as primary or supplemental study. Tones in Mandarin can be a challenge, but Pimsleur handles them well. Lack of accompanying text, in PinYin and Hanzi, can be a challenge to anyone without perfect hearing because of a few very similar consonant sounds, like 'zh'and 'j' or 'ch' and 'q'. Wish Pim would at least publish a basic vocab.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

i really like this product. I lived in China for a year two different times And wish I could have spoken Chinese better. The second year we were there, we took lessons and were surrounded by the language, but I was frustrated by not being able to speak correctly because I couldn't remember the tones. Pimsleur is great because rather than trying to remember the tones, they become inherent in the way the word sounds and the repetition of the learning process means that frustration is gone. I love being able to redo lessons as many times as I need to feel comfortable with the content. Finally, I love that the structures of the language and the grammar rules simply unfold so that you can generalize when you are asked something different.

I use Pimsleur on my way to and from work. I can almost finish a lesson going one way, so the way home is for finishing the lesson and reviewing previous challenging spots.

My frustration now is that I wish my husband were doing it too so we could practice with each other. When I finish the whole course, it may be time to take a third year in China.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

I use Pimsleur while I'm driving, which is great because i can focus on driving, and the language learning becomes second nature, without having to think too hard. I do each lesson as many times as it takes to pretty much nail everything, sometimes as many as 10 times.

Pimsleur is great because it teaches useful vocabulary, perfect(mainlander) pronunciation, and key grammar structures. I saw a complaint about Pimsleur being boring, but it's not trying to entertain anyone. It effectively teaches language by keeping things focused and simple, which makes for fast language learning.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

My Chinese mother-in-law immigrated a couple of months ago to live with us permanently. She speaks no English. I started the Pimsleur course as soon as she arrived and now, two months later, I can have basic conversations with her. She is amazed and delighted.

      Service and delivery comments:

It would be useful to have new vocabulary written in pinyin, along with instructions on how to pronounce new words including pictures of the position of the lips and tongue. For example, at first I had trouble distinguishing the words for "live", "go" and "eat". Written help with pronunciation would have helped.

Some of the phrases and idioms are excessively formal (according to my Chinese wife) and others vary by region. This would be useful to know.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

I listen every day at the gym in the morning. The lessons are practical and useful fork getting tones correct. I need pinyin in order to distinguish similar sounding consonants, and to have a visual reference for what I am learning. But there can be no doubt that the audio repetition and reworking of past lessons is helpful to develop memory and usage.
