Description

Includes 30 lessons and culture notes on 16 CDs, plus a culture notes booklet

This course teaches Mandarin, also known as Standard Chinese. Mandarin is the official spoken language in Mainland China and Taiwan. It is also widely spoken in Singapore and Malaysia, and it is one of the five official languages of the UN. Mandarin is used in Chinese schools, colleges, universities, and in the media. Learn Mandarin Chinese today with Pimsleur.

Comprehensive Mandarin Chinese I includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus a Culture Booklet. Upon completion of this Level I program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more.  You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items.  You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. More directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane.  Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family.

One hour of recorded Cultural Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

Instead of listening to music or a talk show on my 30 minute commute home, I listened to one 30 minute lesson until the set was completed. I am amazed to find that I have learned more Mandarin in 30 days than all the Spanish I learned from my entire first year in high school. Not only did I learn more but it comes so much more naturally compared to trying to use what I learned of Spanish from the traditional teaching methods. In high school I really wanted to learn spanish but even after my second year of it I saw that I did not know enough for it to be of any use so I elected to also take the advanced spanish courses for the last two year totalling 4 years of formal spanish language instruction. After 4 years of that I was only able to communicate at a very basic level and it still did not come very naturally. After I completed the first Pimsleur Mandarin set of 30 lessons I immediately purchased the next two and have now completed those also. I have learned more Mandarin from the Pimsleur system in 90 days than all the Spanish I learned from those 4 years by the traditional system. Not only have I learned more but speaking it comes naturally and I can understand a lot more when hearing people speak. When learning any language it is best to find someone that speaks the language you are studying and even though it might feel awkward at first, it really helps to try communicating. After completing the first set I was able to communicate with the staff of various chinese owned/operated businesses and they were surprised to see how well I spoke. The descriptions of each set are pretty accurate with the first being the basic set, the second being more and the third being even more. The best part about this system is that you get the foundational structure of the language along with some decent vocabulary from the first set and the following sets build on that foundation with more vocabulary as well as some advanced stuctures. It is well worth doing all three instead of just the basic, you will get so much more vocabulary but even just the basic package will blow you away. There really is no downside to this system. After learning the spoken form of this language I found that I can read the romanized written form also. My 30 minute commute time was much more productive with this system. Now that I have finished Mandarin I am going to keep using my commute time to learn another language! Thank you Dr. Pimsleur and thank you to the Simon and Schuster Team!!

I was looking at visiting Taiwan for a year, but it did not happen. The job fell through unexpectedly so I lost the enthusiam to finish the course. So take my words for what they're worth. Learning Mandarin did not come as easily to me as the other languages I learned did, have. I do believe in this company and they make good products, but in this course the words quickly sound the same so total immersion is for me going to be the only way I learn Mandarin. Hopefully this Pimsleur course will provide some bridge when that time comes...

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I simply listen to a new lesson everyday, and try to spend extra time listening to previous lessons as time permits. I've tried many methods before (Rosetta Stone, self-study, 1x1 sessions with a teacher…), and nothing has helped me retain as much as the Pimsleur method.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

When I take my daily walk, I listen to a unit on my MP3 player. I have to repeat each unit various times before I am ready to move on. Chinese is difficult because it is very different from English and from the other languages that I have studied (Spanish, German, and Hebrew). I gave it five stars even though I wish it had a reading component because I knew that Chinese did not have a reading component when I purchased it and because having a reading component for non-phonetic languages would be difficult.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I only have good things to say about Pimsleur.
It is my second language using this method. I find the method to be realistic, thoughtful, and most importantly .....effective.
My colleagues and friends, who are Chinese, laugh at my progress, but at around lesson 5-6, vocabulary increases and am able to begin to pick up bits and pieces of conversations.
Of course along the way, I learn a word or two, but I actually find that if someone wants to help me with a new phrase...it messes me up.
Want to stick with Pimsleur to the end of all the courses.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I use the product as told to, everyday, for 30 minutes per day. As an older adult, never having taken a foreign language, I find fun, but very challenging. I am am lesson 6 & am finding that I need to do the same lesson for a couple of days, Otherwise I really fall behind. It also helps me to clearly hear the pronunciation. I would recommend this study.
