Description

Includes 30 lessons and culture notes (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and culture notes

Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, colleges, and universities, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country. Mandarin is one of the five official languages of the UN.
Can learning another language be as easy as speaking your own? Yes with Pimsleur it’s that easy. Learn on your own time, at your own pace, and wherever you choose. Mandarin Chinese Phase 2 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one additional hour of culture notes, and is designed to be used after completing Phase 1.

  • In the first 10 lessons of Phase 2, you begin to use the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Conversations become fuller, and learners are able to discuss business and social activities, manage shopping situations, and express their interests. As you progress, vocabulary is expanded and fluency increases.
  • The next 10 lessons of Phase 2 allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You learn to bargain with shopkeepers, deal with business situations, get and give medical information, and discuss the weather.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 2, you’ve doubled your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll gain experience asking for assistance, finding a location that is some distance away, and using relative structures – faster, slower, etc. Sports and leisure activities are explored, as well as shopping, changing money, and future travel plans. By the end of Phase 2, you’re speaking at a midintermediate level with nearnative pronunciation, and you are comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

One hour of recorded Culture Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These Notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

I listen every day at the gym in the morning. The lessons are practical and useful fork getting tones correct. I need pinyin in order to distinguish similar sounding consonants, and to have a visual reference for what I am learning. But there can be no doubt that the audio repetition and reworking of past lessons is helpful to develop memory and usage.

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) II, Comprehensive:

I was very impressed with these language lessons. As an older person (aged 66), my memory has faded some, and it took me much longer than 30 minutes to learn the material introduced in a single lesson. Usually I repeated a session for several days before moving forward. However, I was always able to advance steadily, albeit at a slower pace than suggested.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

I am just doing Mandarin for fun adn travel. I was in China for 12 days a few months ago and plan to return for another tour. The lessons have all hte familiar Pimsluer magic. Lots of delayed repetition and at some point you start to remember and even to react to quesions quickly.
As everyone seems to say, it would be a good addition to add some written work. The younger chinese people use Pin Yan to spell out sounds on their cell phones for instant messaging. It would help if some of this was engineered into the lessons. Maybe it will be in Mandarin III, I have not progressed beyond lessin 21 of II.

The basic principles remain: It works! but it only works if you work. Other commercial programs may be good for reviewing a language you already knonw, but in my experience, Pimsluer is the only method that will teach you to speak a new language.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

I listen to the product in the car, where I have 15 minutes at a time to listen to it. So I would like the ability to choose between lesson lengths... 15 or 1 HR.

It is great as a review tool for me. But I wish that the speakers would use less English. It is fine in the beginning, but by disc 2/3 the narrator should only be using Chinese (other than to explain the meaning of new words and usage at the beginning of a class.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Units 1-30:

Since I live in Los Angeles, I spend a lot of time alone in my car. Pimsleur's Mandarin course is an effective way to use this time productively. The lessons are extremely well done, easy to understand and interactive. I highly recommend the course.
