Description

Includes 30 lessons and culture notes (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and culture notes

Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, colleges, and universities, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country. Mandarin is one of the five official languages of the UN.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Mandarin Chinese Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of culture notes in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information or preferences, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to really participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more and more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. You can talk about your immediate family, go on a car trip, and ask for and understand directions. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening and traveling with children. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

One hour of recorded Culture Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These Notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I use the product as told to, everyday, for 30 minutes per day. As an older adult, never having taken a foreign language, I find fun, but very challenging. I am am lesson 6 & am finding that I need to do the same lesson for a couple of days, Otherwise I really fall behind. It also helps me to clearly hear the pronunciation. I would recommend this study.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

A great product that I use daily while walking (makes for a productive walk). The pace is good. I actually repeat each lesson before moving on to the next so each lesson takes 2 days. I also use the Pimsleur Companion text to learn the characters (easily found via a web search).
I'm looking forward to the next phases once I complete the first phase.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

It is very easy to use. I would listen during my commutes to and from work on a daily basis. It helps a lot to actually hear the words that are being said. It is also very organized and the phone app works great.

Service and delivery comments:

It would be nice to have some literature on the material being learned. That being said, I knew before I bought it that it was all audio, so I am not upset. Switching the format would be helpful as well. It does work, but each lesson is set up the same and can be dull to listen to at times.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I am a native Chinese speaker. I just purchased the program for my daughter, who is 10 years old. I tried to teach her Chinese myself since she was very young, but without very satisfactory results. I was the only one in the family that spoke the language, and my busy schedule did not allow me to spend the time necessary with her to practice the language on a regular basis. She learned, and she forgot. Now with this program, the language learning process is much easier for her and for me. For each unit, I will go through it once with her, ask her to identify the new words, and write down the new words for her (I taught her Chinese pinyin). Because of her age and her school homework, it usually takes her 2-3 days to master one unit (100 percent), then she goes to the next. I also speak with her in Chinese using the same vocabulary she learns in each unit to reinforce her learning. I notice that because of the regular practice, her listening comprehension is much better, and she speaks without accent. I spend less time teaching her but achieve much better results. I am impressed.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I went to China in May for work connections, and hope to return. I promised myself to be able to speak with my associates there next time in Chinese, so when I came home I bought the Pimsleur Language Course. It has turned out to be one of my smarter decisions.

I listen mainly in the car. I usually listen to a unit three times before moving on. I like the repetition of a lesson and how it builds on previous ones so you don't forget. And I also like how the lessons are at normal conversational speed. At first I don't understand but then after a couple of hearings I do. I also like that I have to answer questions out loud.

I've had this program now 2 months. My Chinese friends are amazed at how I can speak because i couldn't speak a word before. I'm only on Unit 15, but I said to a friend in Mandarin, "my husband and I are eating dinner in a restaurant tonight."
I was so proud of myself!
