Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Hong Kongers were surprised I knew ANY Cantonese. Most Americans learn Mandarin, even when going to Hong Kong. However, English speakers will have NO trouble in Hong Kong. I never met a person who didn't speak it. Using Cantonese for bargaining is extremely effective and since people around you don't expect that you speak Cantonese, you can frequently eavesdrop on conversations.

While I was escorting an Internationa Sea Cadet Exchange to Hong Kong, I wanted to be prepared. I think it impressed our hosts and broke the ice.

The conversation in the lessons tended to be far too formal at times. I wish a more casual approach (which is all I ever saw used and had to learn myself) was provided.

I ordered in restaurants, greeted people, corrected misunderstanding/mis-translations, and interacted with common people as well as dignitaries briefly, before they switched to English. After pleasantries there isn't enough vocabulary to have conversations. Since there is only one course, it kind of stops here. I wish we had more courses available.

Service and delivery comments:

How to improve? Add informal interactions as well.
I think the buying Gas part was a bit over done. I got bogged down in that. Also, bargaining at more realistic values, not 1 and 2, but 100 and 200 or more HK$ would be more valuable.

I got what I paid for. I don't think I needed anything else. I guess I wish I knew there wasn't any plans on having Cantonese 2 or 3.

I borrowed this series from a friend and learned more in 3 weeks than I have learned in years using other methods.

    Service and delivery comments:

My wish is that Pimsleur would release levels 2 and 3 like they have in the Chinese Mandarin series.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This is a very convenient way to learn. You're not confined to a desk and computer. Download it and use it virtually anywhere you want. Download it to your smart phone or MP3 player and you're completely mobile. The individual lesson units are at a perfect length. Repetition comes at the right time. Just when I realize I've forgotten how to say something, it comes around again. This manner of reinforcement works great for locking words and phrases in the mind. After a few times, the words and phrases that I keep forgetting becomes engrained in my mind.

The first twenty-five units has been fairly basic conversation. Hopefully, upcoming units will deal more in everyday things encountered in life such as: door, door knob, clouds, tools, etc. It's somewhat disappointing that after 25 units, only basic greeting and conversation has been covered. I expect more for my investment. At this point in the lessons, you are very limited in vocabulary. Colors and basic everyday words have yet to be introduced.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I started the course to learn some Cantonese to use on my bi-annual trips to Hong Kong. I have a good ear for music which helps and have been told by my Cantonese speaking friends that I have good pronunciation (thanks to the course). I've only just started but am looking forward to continuting. The only reason for not giving it five stars is that there is no Cantonese Phase II by Pimsleur. That is very unfortunate.
