Description

Includes 30 lessons and culture notes on 16 CDs, plus a culture notes booklet

Cantonese, one of several major languages in China, is mainly spoken in Hong Kong, Guangdong, the Guangxi provinces, and in most overseas Chinese communities in Australia, Europe, and North America. Pimsleur's Cantonese teaches Cantonese as spoken in Hong Kong.

Comprehensive Cantonese Chinese includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus a Culture Booklet. Upon completion of this program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more.  You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items.  You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. More directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane.  Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family.

One hour of recorded Cultural Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This is a very convenient way to learn. You're not confined to a desk and computer. Download it and use it virtually anywhere you want. Download it to your smart phone or MP3 player and you're completely mobile. The individual lesson units are at a perfect length. Repetition comes at the right time. Just when I realize I've forgotten how to say something, it comes around again. This manner of reinforcement works great for locking words and phrases in the mind. After a few times, the words and phrases that I keep forgetting becomes engrained in my mind.

The first twenty-five units has been fairly basic conversation. Hopefully, upcoming units will deal more in everyday things encountered in life such as: door, door knob, clouds, tools, etc. It's somewhat disappointing that after 25 units, only basic greeting and conversation has been covered. I expect more for my investment. At this point in the lessons, you are very limited in vocabulary. Colors and basic everyday words have yet to be introduced.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I started the course to learn some Cantonese to use on my bi-annual trips to Hong Kong. I have a good ear for music which helps and have been told by my Cantonese speaking friends that I have good pronunciation (thanks to the course). I've only just started but am looking forward to continuting. The only reason for not giving it five stars is that there is no Cantonese Phase II by Pimsleur. That is very unfortunate.

    Hugely Helpful, Now Where's Part 2 & 3?

    By MmBuddha

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Cantonese is so scarcely represented when it comes to language learning in the West, which is why i'm hugely grateful for having this Pimsleur course, especially since (unlike textbooks) I can work on the intonation so crucial to speaking Cantonese correctly.

Like some others here, I would like to appeal to Pimsleur to PLEASE release part 2 & 3 of the Cantonese course. Since this language is so hard to learn in the west and yet is the lingua franca of most overseas Chinese communities, I and i'm sure many others would greatly value this continued curriculum. Thank You.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Besides total immersion method of actually living in hong kong, this is the best method available to learn cantonese.
It will teach you the basics to survive in cantonese speaking areas of china. It is very good at teaching the tones, which is essential for cantonese.
I would listen to a 30 min lesson about 2-4 times, depending on the difficulty of the lesson. Listening on my way into work and sometimes on the way home, I was able to complete unit 1 in about 2 months. My boyfriends family only speaks cantonese, and they were very very impressed when I came to visit about a month after completing the lessons.
the 4 start review is because there is only the 1 unit.... PIMSLEUR! PLEASE MAKE MORE UNITS!!! :)
