Description
Includes 30 lessons and culture notes on 16 CDs, plus a culture notes booklet
Cantonese, one of several major languages in China, is mainly spoken in Hong Kong, Guangdong, the Guangxi provinces, and in most overseas Chinese communities in Australia, Europe, and North America. Pimsleur's Cantonese teaches Cantonese as spoken in Hong Kong.
Comprehensive Cantonese Chinese includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus a Culture Booklet. Upon completion of this program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
- In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
- In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. More directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family.
One hour of recorded Cultural Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Chinese (Cantonese), Comprehensive:
I have been practicing using this course for several months, repeating each lesson several time to make the words and the (difficult) pronunciation stay in mind. Too bad for me I'm just traveling to Hong Kong and not living there. But now when I go there I am able to have some very basic conversation.
However the product is perhaps a little bit unbalanced towards the speaking part: in fact my listening skills have not improved as much as my speaking skills. It has happened that I couldn't understand someone saying some sentence I know and can pronounce very well.
If I may give a suggestion to other users, it's very important to persist and insist a lot with this language, doing at least half an hour per day. It is also very important to immediately try to use what learned.
Service and delivery comments:
I really would like to see a Cantonese II part. The Cantonese I is complete for what it can offer within 30 lessons, but it's really too basic.
It may be also time to modernize a bit all the courses, by adding for example some online listening part followed by questions for self assessment. In fact I believe more listening/comprehension dialogs inside the lessons would improve the course.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I listen to lessons whenever i have a quiet moment to myself, or walking/cycling around.
very good, clear instruction that is presented in a way that makes learning and remembering the language fun and easier.
I have found that sometimes, the phrases/expressions taught in lessons sometimes differ from what is actually used in day to day situations (from speaking to native cantonese speakers)

- It Works
Cons
- Not enough levels

Comments about Chinese (Cantonese), Comprehensive:
My girlfriends parents only speak Cantonese so I am motivated to learn the language. I find that there are a lack of programs for learning this language. I found the program really fits my particular learning style and I learned how questions are structured in Cantonese. I listened to each lesson around 4 times in order to learn the new material before I could move onto the next lesson. I also like that I am able to retain the material after working through it. I just wished there were more than 30 levels.

Comments about Chinese (Cantonese), Comprehensive:
I was delighted to find out that Pimsleur had Cantonese lessons, as I have wanted to learn it for quite a while but could never find quality instruction. The CDs make this daunting language fun to learn, and while I wouldn't call it easy because of the tonal nature of Cantonese, it is far less intimidating to learn than I believed. And I actually enjoy the lessons; it is great to learn a language this way instead of getting bogged down with books filled with rules of grammar, etc. Highest recommendation, eagerly await Cantonese Part 2.
