Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 170 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic, Brazil, and Portugal's former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia. Pimsleur's Brazilian Portuguese teaches the Sao Paulo dialect of Brazilian Portuguese

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Brazilian Portuguese, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 2 and provide you with an introduction to reading Brazilian Portuguese. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Port (Braz) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

My daily commute time for work is around 35 minutes, so I was miserably wasting 70 minutes a day listening to the same songs over and over again or hearing mainly tragedies around the world in the local news. I discovered this learning approach by accident and read wonderful things about it. I am a Spanish native speaker, fluent in English and basic French, so I wanted to try a completely new language to try the method out. That's how I chose Portuguese. I received phase one as a gift and it has been the best investment of my commuting time. This method is extremely simple and you don't even notice you're really learning. I'm ready to purchase phases 2 & 3. Don't really care about not knowing how to write for now, that will come easy once I know how to speak.

Comments about Port (Braz) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I used Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish and Pimsleur's for Portuguese. Maybe it was due to my knowledge of Spanish but I learned much faster with Pimsleur. I really like the being able to take it with you via mp3 player, Ipod/pad, etc. (although Ipod did not accept it as well as my creative mp3 player did. But that is an Apple issue.)

I used the product as directed. Listened to a new lesson each day. Sometimes 2 times per day. Sometimes I would begin the daily lesson by listening to the previous days lesson before beginning the new one. I seemed to learn very quickly.

There are a few improvements that could and should be made to the lessons. Almost every lesson included how to say beer. I would havelike to have learned more how to say different foods and drinks. The lessons teach you how to say cold but leave out how to say hot. These are some needed improvements that I noticed but overall they have an excellent learning program.

Comments about Port (Braz) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I like to learn languages and have learned several to intermediate and advanced levels. Also, I have taught languages. With that said, this is the best audio program I have found. Regretfully, the visual written aspect is missing and it seems that Pimsleur only sells hard copies of its books. This is a big negative; however, I am already familiar with Portuguese to low intermediate (and specifically how it's written) and am using this to go back, starting at level one, to cement vocabulary and pronunciation and spoken fluencey. Therefore, I do fine without the written material. Used in this capacity, as auxiliary learning material for spoken language, I have found it to be unsurpassed. (And I have experience with several other popular software and online sites).

Comments about Portuguese (Brazilian) I, Comprehensive:

I was looking for a way to learn Brazilian Portuguese but didn't want something computer based because I didn't have the time to devote to it. My friend then told me about the Pimsleur method being solely audio and it just fit my lifestyle perfectly. I commute an hour each way to work in the car and I can do a lesson in the morning and review it in the evening. I am learning and enjoying it immensely.
