About the Egyptian Arabic Language

Egyptian Arabic is mainly spoken in urban Egypt. Egyptian Arabic has also gained a high degree of acceptance throughout the Arabic-speaking world because of its use in films. Pimsleur's Egyptian Arabic teaches the Careen dialect, the dialect of the Egyptian capital.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Egyptian Arabic Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Arabic alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

I am using this program to be able to have simple conversational skills with some friends, and with some family members who are moving from Egypt to our area. When trying it out with my Egyptian husband, he grinned and laughed with amusement and delight that his American wife can sound so "Egyptian".

Because the speed is too fast for a beginner, I imported the mp3s into sound editing software (Audacity) and slowed it down by 15% to be able to prounce it as a beginner, and then sped it up until I can pronounce it as fast as a native speaker. I also will type out a transcript, because it helps to visually understand the pronunciation differences for the Cairo dialect vs. fushaah (modern standard Arabic).

I wish I could really use this but hopefully once I learn more Arabic words I can use this program to reinforce what I have learned

Comments about Arabic (Egy) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

If you have never used Pimsleur before, keep in mind that this is an audio method, so you will only learn to speak the language, not read or write it. If you want to learn to speak Arabic, this is a great program to use. The use of graduated interval recall is very effective in aiding memory. I converse with native Arabic speakers now with ease and confidence.

Comments about Arabic (Egy) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I've learned basic conversational Egyptian Arabic and I can use it with my girlfriend. We've had a great time being able to say a few things to each other in her native language. I really wish there was a phase 2 available! I would buy it!
