About the Egyptian Arabic Language

Egyptian Arabic is mainly spoken in urban Egypt. Egyptian Arabic has also gained a high degree of acceptance throughout the Arabic-speaking world because of its use in films. Pimsleur's Egyptian Arabic teaches the Careen dialect, the dialect of the Egyptian capital.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Egyptian Arabic Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Arabic alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Arabic (Egy) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I initially started getting interested in Arabic after travelling to North Africa. I tried several "learn on your own" type courses and, although informative and helpful, they eventually seemed to come up lacking. I would eventually lose interest. The Pimsleur Egyptian Arabic lessons have been stimulating and fun since the beginning. I really like the conversations in the course--listening to native speakers in brief exchanges. The lesson focusing on numbers seemed overly repetitive but that was probably because I was fairly familiar with the numbers to begin with. I've listened to the 30 lessons 3 times and would like to further courses offered in the future!

          Comments about Arabic (Egyptian), Comprehensive:

Great, effective product. There's not a lot out there for learning Egyptian Arabic but this is a highly detailed course and you'll be surprised as I was at how quickly you pick up on it. Very rewarding and practical. A lot of fun, just need more of it!

          Service and delivery comments:

We need more levels please! Just the one phase isn't enough.

Comments about Arabic (Egy) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I enjoyed using this product and only wish there had been parts 2 and 3. I've since used the Easter Arabic parts 1, 2 and 3, but since I'm actually of Egyptian descent, this dialects more appropriate for me. The system's on point and as I mentioned in the Easter Arabic thread, it reconfigures the way you think in response to your interlocutor and therefore articulate those thoughts back. Most language courses focus mainly on reading and listening and understanding dialogues, but what this course does it focus on teaching you to actually speak the language, which is what most people intend when embarking on such a journey.

          Service and delivery comments:

They should definitely produce levels 2 and 3! They should also have a complete transcript of the entire course for the benefit of those that maybe be mispronouncing words.

Comments about Arabic (Egy) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

It works when I talk to my Egyptian colleague, who was so impressed: "You are the first foreigner that I know who speaks Egyptian Arabic."
            I strongly demand Phase 2, 3...
